Syracuse University's visual communications department in the School of Art and Design is home until this year (2007) to the Independent Study Degree Program (ISDP) Master of Arts. The School is the oldest university-based degree-granting art school in the United tates, founded in 1874. The Wall Street Journal described its advertising design unit as one of the top such programs in the country. Art Direction magazine descibed its graduates as "some of the best prepared students [entering] the communication inductry during the past few years." The publication went on to comment on the SU students' "variety of approaches to problem solving" and their "professional mechanocal ability," "unusual conceptual problem-solving skills," and "heavy emphasis on individuality."
