Ray did not play! He was the toughest instructor at Art Center College of Design when it was called "A design boot camp." When Ray marched down the hallway, students hurriedly moved aside, or better yet, turned around and went the other way. The slackers avoided Ray's classes like the plague. However, the good ones could not get enough of him. Most alumni of Art Center speak very fondly of Mr. Engle.
Ray received his BA degree from Art Center, and MA degree from UCLA. He taught at Art Center
for 14 years, and later at Otis. Ray served one term as President of the Art Center Alumni Association.
Ray worked for Louis Danziger right out of school and eventually opened his own design firm, Ray Engle and Associates. His major clients were Unocal, IBM and Perceive, as well as most of the major advertising agencies in Los Angeles. He was one of the first designers to give my older brother, Brad, a freelance assignment after he started freelancing.
Ad agencies loved to work with Ray's firm because his work made them look good with their clients, and won awards in most of the major design competitions.
Ray is now retired and lives in Vancouver, Canada.
We salute you, Ray. |
