ABOUT YOURSELF

In order to best prepare yourself for filling out applications, writing your résumé, and talking about yourself in interviews and networking.

Write a short paragraph or brief statement about your professional self. Include academic and volunteering experience.

Keep in mind when you talk about yourself in a professional situation that you need to focus on your skills, abilities, education, and work experience.

The Elevator Pitch

One of the most important things you can do as a new graduate and job seeker is learn how to speak about yourself. Being able to sum up unique aspects of your skills and talents in a way that excites others should be a fundamental skill. Yet many people pay little attention to the continuing development of "the elevator pitch". The elevator pitch is a quick, succinct summation of who are you professionally. It should last no longer than the average elevator ride. It is too important to take casually. It's one of the most effective methods available to network with a winning message. Regardless of where you do the pitching–in an elevator, at a sit-down planned meeting you should still be prepared to capture your audience's attention quickly.

Your "Elevator Pitch" must contain:
• A "hook"

• Open your pitch by getting attention with a "hook."
• A statement or question that piques their interest to want to hear more.

• Be about 150-225 words

• Your pitch should go no longer than 60 seconds.

• Passion

• Listeners expect energy and dedication from you.

• A request

At the end of your pitch, you must ask for something.
• Do you want their business card
• A full interview,
• A referral?
