You will need to understand and organize a lot of information when creating a web site. Organizing is a vital part of your work process and site maps help to put it all together. Once you understand your target audience, you will need to create a site map that identifies the navigation similar to a flow chart. Your client needs to contribute to this process in order to create a map that is as complete as possible prior to developing the site.

There are different structure methods to consider when making a site map. Here are two of the most popular site maps; Star and Pyramid.

The Star structured map begins at the center and expands outward. The map is organized so the broader information is near the center and becomes more specific as it expands toward the outer part of the map.

The Pyramid structured map resembles a flow chart and displys the inforamtion in a more linear fashion. The map is organized so the broader information is near the top and becomes more specific as it expands downward.

Your assignment is to create a site map for a web site you like. One of the first things you will notice is that this will not be a small task.
